Aktivitas yang dilakukan dalam perancangan instrumentasi:
1) Aktivitas Umum
Consist of :
a) Bid Document Review
Ø Fasilitas yang akan dibangun
Ø Scope of works
Ø Schedule
Ø Design data
Ø Design criteria
Ø Client’s requirements
b) Klarifikasi / kick of meeting
c) Instrument index
List yang mencantumkan tag number instrument, deskripsi / servis, P&ID no, status, type, lokasi, data sheet no, hook up no, manufacture name, loop diagram, plot plan no, piping plant, PO number, & informasi lainnya.
d) Spesifikasi umum instruments
Permintaan minimum dari client yang sifatnya umum, biasanya isinya permintaan minimum untuk type, material, rating, jenis signal, range signal, cara pemasangan & sifat khususnya.

2) Aktivitas yang berhubungan dengan operasi

Consist of :
a) Filosofi sistem control
Menentukan tentang sistem kontrol apa yang diinginkan oleh client. Apakah berdasarkan location based (Local control & Central control), signal transmission based (pneumatic / electric), loop based (open loop, closed loop, feed forward, feed back, cascade, ratio control, split range), mode based (on – off, P mode, PI mode, PD mode, PID mode), dan jenis based (PLC, DCS, SCADA, dll).

b) Filosofi shut down system
Included :
- Local / remote shutdown
- Local panel, central panel / PLC
- Pneumatic, electric, hydraulic / radio
- Sensor proses & elemen akhir
- Fire & gas system
 

c kategori shutdown systems :
- Fire shutdown, full shutdown or total shutdown (FSD)
- Process shutdown, emergency shutdown (ESD)
- Unit shut down (USD)
Document yang terkait dgn shutdown system :
- P&ID
- Shut down logic diagram, describe ttg cause & effect relation antara variable process terukur (cause) dan instrument / equipment di field (effect)
Gambar desain yang dihasilkan :
- Shut down control panel (pneumatic or electric) schematic
- Shut down logic ladder diagram untuk PLC


3) Aktivitas yang berhubungan dengan procurement
Included :
- Preparasi datasheet
Meliputi function, type of sensor, material, process connection, power / air supply, input – output signal, area classification, and accessories.
Sebelum membuat data sheet
- Preparasi gambar, skematik & lay out panel (lengkap dengan spesifikasi)
- Instrument installation Bill of Material (BOM)
Sebelum membuat instrument data sheet yang harus dilakukan adalah sizing instruments.
List instrument yang perlu dilakukan sizing adalah control valve, pressure relief valve, orifice plate, breather valve sizing, rupture disk sizing, instrument air consumption, electric power consumption.
Note :
Long lead items (long delivery) : Control valve, shutdown valve, instrument panel, DCS / PLC harus didahuluan data sheetnya.

Kemampuan panel dapat dibagi 3 kelas sbb :
Monitoring panel capability : indicating, recording, alarming.
Control panel capability : intervention of operating through the panel logic operation.
Shut down panel capability : automatic shut down through the panel logic operation.
Instrument Installation Bill of Material (BOM) merupakan list dari instrument / tube fitting, tubing, cable, cable / tubing tray, bolt, pipe support.

4) Aktivitas yang berhubungan dengan installasi
Prepare for :
- Hook up drawing, including pressure lead piping / process hook up, pneumatic hook up, electronic hook up, analyzer hook up.
- Breakdown of instrument drawing, merupakan gambar dari sebuah plant
- Instrument plot plan
- Wiring lay out, route of instrument wiring starting from the instrument trough the junction box up to panel (usually located in control room)
- Wiring interconnection diagram, describe interconnection between instrument, junction box, and panel. Cable size, type, and number of core are shown in the diagram.
- Cable schedule, list of instrument cable, listing the source and destination, load, size, rating dll.
- Tubing lay out, for pneumatic instrument only. Description same as wiring lay out.
- Main cable lay out,
- Cable tray lay out
- Loop diagram, show interconnection of instrument with other instrument that are connected in the loop.
